Various methods and disciplines have proposed to have success in the management of scoliosis. Chiropractic is among those disciplines that claim to have an answer to the century old question: What is the best treatment for scoliosis?

Chiropractic is a system of treatment which derives its methodology from the principle:

A person’s health is largely determined by the nervous system and any problems or anomalies within the said system will impair normal functions of other organ systems.

Chiropractors treat patients by primarily using manual manipulation techniques of the spine. The use of chiropractic methods to manage the signs and symptoms of scoliosis has increased over the years.

How did chiropractic — an alternative health discipline become more popular in treating scoliosis today?

Two main reasons have seem to explain the notion.

  • Chiropractic practitioners have integrated the use of diagnostic tests (x-ray, ultrasound, and other tests for the spine) in their practice, especially in the management of scoliosis. This provides a better picture in assessing and evaluating their individual patients.

  • Electrical stimulation, heat therapy, spinal exercises, and dietary counseling — interventions that have long been used by physical therapists and rehabilitation medicine practitioners are also now part of the chiropractor’s treatment methods.

In fact, the spine has been the main area of the body in the treatment of scoliosis in which the chiropractor has been focusing on since its beginning. This means that an accredited chiropractor has sound knowledge and understanding; as well as creditable skills to manipulate the deformed spine.

In essence, chiropractic manages scoliosis in a holistic manner by incorporating the use of the following:

  • Different modalities to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with scoliosis.

  • The use of braces for scoliosis of moderate severity.

  • Dietary counseling to strengthen bones and muscles.

  • Inclusion of exercises for maintenance of health and well-being.
