This is a common complaint of many people: I wake up with a stiff lower back in the morning. Why does this happen?

In my experience people suffering from lower back pain in the morning, most likely have a damaged or "slipped disc".

"So why would I have pain in the morning"

The middle of the disc (NP) contains the nucleus pulposis, which is a gel like material that is 70% water in its make up.

At night when sleeping, the pressure on the spine is significantly less, resulting in a movement into the disc of water, during the night. This results in a larger swollen disc which then puts pressure on nerve structure and can also stretch the nerves.

When you wake up in the morning, and you have pre existing damage to the disc, this can result in pain and stiffness, and that'ssot likely why you have morning pain.

Dr Nick Boden is the chief chiropractor at Spine&Joint clinics and has 15 years of experience in treating lower back pain and slipped discs. Call 0362049100 for an appointment.
